Mason Graham MRI Confirms MCL and Ankle Sprains; Browns List DT Week-to-Week
Mason Graham sustained a confirmed MCL sprain and ankle sprain to his left lower extremity during Thursday night's game, with MRI results disclosed Friday officially validating both injuries. At two days post-injury, Graham is right at the start of his recovery window — this is very early, and the full picture of severity is still forming.
The MRI confirmation is the key development here. Both injuries are now CONFIRMED by imaging, though the grade of each sprain has not been publicly disclosed — the team's "week-to-week" designation, combined with MRI clearance from surgery, suggests the injuries are being managed conservatively, which is consistent with Grade 1–2 presentations for each structure. Grade 2 injuries cannot be ruled out for either the MCL or the syndesmotic/ATFL complex, and the combination of two concurrent lower-extremity sprains at a position that demands explosive pass-rush leverage raises real functional questions even if each injury is moderate in isolation.
For a Grade 1 MCL sprain, the literature supports a 1–3 week return window. A Grade 2 MCL carries a 3–6 week floor. The ankle component matters too — if this is a standard lateral ankle sprain (ATFL), a Grade 1–2 presentation adds 1–4 weeks; if there is any syndesmotic involvement, the floor climbs to 4–8 weeks. The multi-injury nature of this event is the complicating factor: Graham needs both structures functional simultaneously to handle the rotational forces of an NFL defensive line snap. The binding constraint is whichever injury is more severe.
The "week-to-week" label is consistent with the early end of a combined Grade 1–2 scenario — but only if both sprains trend toward the lower end of their respective ranges. Two days in, with no practice trajectory data yet available, the biology gives us a minimum of roughly 1–3 weeks and a realistic range pushing toward 3–6 weeks depending on how the MCL grades out on closer evaluation. ParatrOs will update this estimate as the practice report trajectory develops through the week.
